Program Highlights for Tuesday 16th September, 2008

Welcome to the Four Play program highlights for 16th September, 2008.

Tonight we had a great show - probably one of the most fascinating guests we've had so far and just a really great mix of music - if we do say so ourselves!

First up - we showcased a Californian rock band founded in 1986 - best known for it's lead singer Gwen Stefani - the band of course is No Doubt. The band was originally formed with Gwen, her brother Eric and John Spence. The release of 1995's "Tragic Kingdom" and the single "Just a Girl" allowed the group to acheive mainstream success....

Track 1: Just a Girl
Track 2: Hey Baby
Track 3: It's My Life
Track 4: Don't speak

Tonight, our special guest was JOY's very own sometime "informant" with Paul Anthony, Tuesday Brekky regular, occasional daytime presenter and that other job he does for the station - Sponsorships/sales.

David came in to speak about a favorite of his - the Pet Shop Boys. His angle however came from the perspective of his former position, at record company EMI when he was responsible for attempting to break the Pet Shop Boys onto a highly recalcitrant and rock oriented mid-eighties Australian commercial radio.

This would have to be one of the most fascinating journeys our guests on Four Play have yet taken you on. Great stuff from David!

Track 1: "Losing My Mind" performed by Liza Minelli
Track 2: "In Private" performed by Dusty Springfield
Track 3: "What have I done to deserve this" performed by the West End Girls
Track 4: "My Girl" performed by the Pet Shop Boys

So the first three songs were other artists performing PSB songs, then we finished up with the Pet Shop Boys actually doing a cover of a Madness song!

If you want to hear what David had to say, click on the link to the podcast. It's really great stuff!

Thanks David - hope you'll come back sometime!

Now... last week, we showcased The Go Go's and we promised we'd get to Belinda Carlisle and we keep our promises. And before he left, David let us know that he was with Belinda Carlisle, in Chapel St, in Melbourne, when she purchased the dress seen in the film clip to Summer Rain. Thanks again David :-)

Track 1: Heaven is a place on Earth
Track 2: Mad about You
Track 3: Summer Rain
Track 4: Leave a Light on

Last up tonight - a bit of fun - we picked another four tracks from the title sequences from four James Bond Movies. We've done it before, but there were just too many good tracks to ignore this and not come back for another four!

Track 1: Nobody Does it Better - Carly Simon
Track 2: A View to a Kill - Duran Duran
Track 3: We have all the time in the World - Louis Armstrong (from On His Majesty's Secret Service)
Track 4: The Man with the Golden Gun - Lulu

That's it! As usual thanks for listening and thanks for checking out the Blog. If you want us include any other information here, leave us a comment, or send us an email at the links to the right.

Jay and Chris.

Program Highlights for Tuesday 9th September, 2008

Welcome to the Four Play program highlights for 9th September, 2008.

Chris and Jay came into the program, just a little tired, after piloting the Campervan from 4 - 7 to fill in for Bridge who was unwell, but like the troopers they are, they couldn't let you all down, and pulled out all the stops for another two hours of great four plays!

First up tonight - An all female pop band formed in 1978, in the USA who made Rock History by being the first all-girl band that both wrote their songs and played their own instruments to top the US Billboard charts. This band was the springboard for it's lead singer, Belinda Carlisle, and we are talking about The Go-Go's.

Track 1 : We Got the Beat
Track 2 : Vacation
Track 3: Head Over Heels
Track 4: Our Lips Are Sealed

That last track was the only track to actually chart here in Australia and peaked at number 8 on the ARIA charts in 1982.

Tonight our special guest, Mish, brought us a really interesting Four Play on producer/artist Mark Ronson. She let us know all about all the great artists he has worked with and then played for us a number of songs we would all know and love, but with his own personal twist on his original productions for those other artists.

Track 1: Stop Me
Track 2: Oh My God
Track 3: Toxic
Track 4: Valerie

Thanks to Mish for bringing us Valerie, from Amy Winehouse who Mark Ronson produced the last album for. And that very different version of what is originally Britney Spears Toxic.

To hear everything that Mich had to say - go to the podcast.

Third set for the evening and we showcased Sara Bareilles.
She's an american singer-songwriter-pianist, who's recently acheived mainstream success with the hit single "Love Song", which brought her into the number one spot the Billboard Pop 100 Chart.

Track 1: Love Song
Track 2: Many the Miles
Track 3: Bottle it up
Track 4: Love on the rocks

Tonight we had a special highlight - we reviewed the ARIA charts as usual - we have been talking each week about the Ce Ce Peniston "Finally - 2008 remix" which has surfaced on the club charts for the last few weeks and was actually number one on those charts this week! So we decided to give everyone a listen to that track. We had the mirror ball running and Cam had his shirt off and Dancing around the JOY office.

Last set for the night, we camped it up a bit from the eighties with the UK's Billy Ocean. He was an artist not without his critics, some of whom took issue with his tendency to write his songs according to a pop formula. Well, you know, here at Four Play we embrace a good pop formula! Thanks Billy. :-)

Track 1: Love Really Hurts Without You
Track 2: Caribbean Queen
Track 3: Get Outta My Dreams
Track 4: When the Going Gets Tough

Thanks for listening to Four Play on JOY 94.9 and don't forget to tune in again, next Tuesday night at 9pm when our special guest will be JOY's own David Hunt "The Informant", and he'll be showcasing an interesting take on some of the music from the Pet Shop Boys.

Look forward to having you all there!

Jay and Chris

Program Highlights for Tuesday 2nd September, 2008

Welcome to the Four Play program highlights for 2nd September, 2008.

After Chris took time off from last weeks program to go report on the Sneaky Sound System concert at QBH (someone had to do it!), we thought bringing you the best four songs of the new album '2' would be the best way to convert a few more of you over to being fans of these great independent Australian talent! Given everyone has heard "Kansas City" we gave you an opportunity to listen to four other songs off the new album, which debuted at number one on the ARIA charts, last week.

Track 1 : It's Not My Problem
Track 2 : 16

Track 3: Lost in The Future

Track 4: I Want Everything

That last track is rumoured to be the next single off the album, but we will have to wait and see on that one, but also of note, the song "I Want Everything" was originally offered to Kylie Minogue as Sneaky's contribution to her album X. She should have used it!

Our featured guest set tonight came from special guest, Liam. He came to the show with an aim to increase the camp level of the guest sets, which he ably acheived, by bringing us the best of Mel & Kim / Kim Appleby.
Liam took us through Mel's sad and early passing, as well as all the goss on what those hats were all about! As well, did you know, Kim's one-time boyfriend. Craig Logan of Bros fame, was also Danni Minogue's one time fiance?

Track 1: Showing Out

Track 2: Respectable

Track 3: Don't Worry

Track 4: Light Of The World

To hear what Liam had to say, Go to the podcast.

The next set for the evening, we featured Billy Joel - A man who has been on the pop scene around the world since the early '70's. We noted that in a farewell concert in 1999, Billy performed for four hours straight. We agreed a Four Play was ok, Four hours was probably a little too much Billy!

Track 1: Piano Man

Track 2: For the Longest Time

Track 3: We Didn't Start the Fire

Track 4: River of Dreams

The final set for the night was Duran Duran.
One of the most successful "New Romantic" bands of the eighties, out of the UK, who have never disbanded and are still touring and releasing albums.

Track 1: Planet Earth

Track 2: Hungry Like the Wolf

Track 3: Girls on Film

Track 4: (Reach up for the) Sunrise

That last track was the Jason Nevins remix - which was from 2004 and featured on the "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy" soundtrack album. The Queer Eye team described Duran Duran as the first "metrosexuals".

Thanks for listening to Four Play on JOY 94.9 and don't forget to tune in again, next Tuesday night at 9pm when our special guest will be Michy, and she'll be showcasing the artist Mark Ronson.

Look forward to having you all there!

Jay and Chris
