Nancy Sinatra and Gender Bender Marilyn (Tuesday 16th December, 2008)

We started the show with Nancy Sinatra and "Another Gay Sunshine Day". Nancy recorded that for "Another Gay Movie" in 2006 and it's been recently re-used as the title track from "Another Gay Sequel". JOY's DVD of the week this week! A very Camp, crass, and over the top laugh at the sillier parts of our culture and and identity. Worth a look if you want something totally without substance to have a belly laugh at.

Unfortunately our planned guest was unwell - get well soon Leanne - so Jay and I had to do the whole show ourselves this week - gawd the pressure!

We started first up with a four play from an album which has just had its CD release after it was originally released on vinyl 23 years ago. It's from a Gender Bender Gay icon, of the same generation as Boy George out of the UK.

Despite Straight Lines is the début album by British New Wave singer Marilyn, released in June 1985. Despite including Marilyn's huge hit "Calling Your Name", the long-awaited album was a commercial failure in the UK, possibly due to it being released well over 18 months after "Calling Your Name" and the subsequent loss of momentum in his career.

If you don't remember Marilyn, these pictures might help you recall...

Track 1: Baby U Left Me
Track 2: You Don't Love Me
Track 3: Surrender Your Love
Track 4: Cry and Be Free

Bonus Track 5: Calling your Name

Next our series of 1980's top 4, with 1982 this year:

Track 1: Ebony and Ivory - Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder #4
Track 2: I Love Rock n Roll - Joan Jett #3
Track 3: Eye of The Tiger - Survivor #2
Track 4: Physical - Olivia Newton-John #1

Next, Jay showcased another of his UK stars with very little exposure here in Australia. Shayne Ward won the 2005 series of X Factor and has actually sold over 1,000,000 records worldwide.

Track 1: That's My Goal
Track 2: No Promises
Track 3: Breathless
Track 4: Over the Rainbow

We finished with a random pick from JOY Volume 3, Human Nature - Deja Vu and to close the show, an old favorite, Coffee from Supersister!

Have a great week.

Program Highlights for Tuesday 9th December, 2008

We started the show with Oleta Adams "Get Here". A song originally written by Brenda Russell in 1988, but re-recorded by Oleta in 1990 to become a #4 hit in the UK and #5 in the US.

The reason - it's the song Jay and Chris witnessed Anthony Callea and Tim Campbell perform as a duet at Anthony's only 2008 performance, the previous Saturday. A very moving song coming from two openly out gay boys very obviously in love!

This week our first guest returned to Four Play after a long gap. Gail has brought us the best of her favorite male and female country artists previously. This time she decided to showcase a band that formed more than 46 years ago!! She talked about their initial successes, the gap between hits and the highs (pun intended) and lows of the lead singer, Brian Wilson. Of course the band is the Beach Boys.

Track 1: Surfin Safari
Track 2: Good Vibrations
Track 3: God Only Knows
Track 4: Kokomo

Thanks to Gail for coming in and if you want to hear what Gail had to say, the podcast can be heard here.

Our next Very Special guest was Rob Mills. He chatted about life, igniting his musical theatre ambition, Rob Guest and his plans for the immediate future. And he brought us a four play on Michael Jackson.

Track 1: Don't Stop 'til You get Enough
Track 2: The Girl is Mine
Track 3: Speed Demon
Track 4: Give In to Me
And if you want to hear what Millsy had to say, the podcast is available here.

Next, we took a look at both the ARIA and AIR charts for the week. Very strong performances from Pink sees her stay at the top of the ARIA charts and Britney Spears debut's at #3 this week in the Album charts with her new album "Circus".

Finally tonight, we bring you the next in our top four songs of each year of the 1980's.
We're showcasing the highest selling four songs for each year and this week it's 1981.

Track 1: (Just Like) Starting Over - John Lennon #4
Track 2: Lady - Kenny Rogers #3
Track 3: Endless Love - Diana Ross and Lionel Ritchie #2
Track 4: Bette Davis Eyes - Kim Carnes #1

Have a great week.

Program Preview - Rob Mills four plays with Chris and Jay

Yep on Tuesday December 9, aussie idol 2003 larrikin, sometime TV host, chart making pop singer and one of the stars of the Melbourne production of Wicked, Rob Mills is dropping by to have a chat and Four Play with the boys.

We also have another friend of Four Play, Gail, making a return visit and our Summer Season "chart topping 80's Four Play" - this week 1981 - can you guess the top 4 selling songs of that year?

And as usual, we'll take a look at the ARIA and AIR charts for the week.

Not sure how we are going to fit it all into 2 hours, but to hear us try, tune in Tuesday night 9pm.

Program Highlights for Tuesday 2nd December, 2008

We opened the show this week with a track to set the tone for our first show of the Summer season and the remarkable feat of actually knowing we've been on air at JOY for a year now! That track is the debut single from 2008 "So You Think You Can Dance" runner-up Rhys, a cover of 2006 German "Popstars" winners "Monrose" called Hot Summer.

A couple of tweaks to the show format for the new season, but basically more of our ever more inane ways to link four songs together and have a yarn on radio!

Tonight, celebrating the start of the summer season, the Four Play to get us off the mark with was a "Hot Summer" themed four play.

Track 1: Schools Out (for summer) - Alice Cooper
Track 2: Endless Summer - Cascada
Track 3: Summer Nights - Grease soundtrack
Track 4: The Boys of Summer - DJ Sammy

Next up, our special guest was a Four Play virgin, Jay's handsome co-worker Josh.

Josh showcased John Mayer for us. Born in October 1977 in Connecticut, USA, John Mayer has had two multi platinum albums since 2003.

Track 1: No Such Thing
Track 2: Why Georgia
Track 3: Bigger Than My Body
Track 4: Vultures

To hear what Josh had to say, take a listen to the podcast now.

Next, we took a look at the ARIA charts for the week. Most notable was that Wes Carr, this years Australian Idol winner, with his winners song, has debuted at number 3 on the charts, which is the worst performance of any Australian Idol winner to this point. And when Natalie Gauci debuted at number 2 last year, the record company wasnt happy.

Then a bit of a change, we've decided to take a look at the AIR charts as well for this season. The AIRs are the Australian Independent Record Labels Association.

Most notable here, #4 on the singles charts is the Wiggles, with "Eagle Rock" featuring Ross Wilson!!

Of course The Potbelleez, The Presets and Sneaky Sound System all feature prominently in these charts as well.

For this season, each week, we're showcasing the highest selling four songs for a year from the 80's decade and this week we started with 1980.

Track 1: Rock with You - Michael Jackson #4
Track 2: Magic - Olivia Newton-John #3
Track 3: Another Brick in the Wall - Pink Floyd #2
Track 4: Call Me - Blondie #1

And Finally tonight.. we ran out of time for a full four play, but Jay tapped once again into his secret source out of SonyBMG in London and gave us a hint of a Four Play we'll show case properly in the next few weeks.

The artist is Shayne Ward.

Track 1: Over the Rainbow
Track 2: A Better Man

We hope you enjoyed the first show in the Summer Season.

Don't forget on next weeks show, our special guest is Rob Mills.

Don't miss it. 9pm - 11pm Tuesday night.

See you then, and have a great week.

Jay and Chris
